Back of Card: What a Friend We Have In Jesus. Joseph Scriven, born in 1819 to wealthy parents, migrated from Ireland to Canada at the age of twenty-five. He lived a simple, selfless life, helping and giving to the poor. In the 1850s, when his mother became seriously ill in Dublin, Scriven wrote a poem to comfort her. Years later, when Scriven himself was taken ill, a friend who was visiting him found the poem near his bed. The poem was called What a Friend We Have in Jesus. It was first published in 1869 in the book, Hymns and Other Verses. "...There is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother." PROVERBS 18:24
