With an estimated 82.5 million mothers in the United States alone that celebrate Mother's Day each year, it is no wonder Mother's Day Cards have become such precious keepsakes!

Cigar and candy boxes containing stacks of Mother's Day cards tied together with a pretty ribbon are stowed in dresser drawers, closets, and attics. Occasionally taken out and reminisced over, from time to time; starting with the first handmade card from kindergarten-aged children, to elaborately designed cards purchased from gift, card, and specialty shops.

Special cards bedecked with lace, glitter, satin ribbon, and beading; ornate cards scented with sachet and flowers. Poems and verses inside each card, attesting to the love and appreciation felt for Mom, for all she has done. Beloved keepsakes to hold close to the heart, and cherish as precious evidence of the love of a child now grown, with a family of their own.

History and Popularity of Mother's Day

Mother's Day has become among the most popular of annual celebrations. So popular, in fact, a projected 152 million Mother's Day cards will crisscross the United States this year. It was first "celebrated" in 1907 by Anna Jarvis as a private tribute to her dear, deceased mother, also named Anna.

A public Mother's Day celebration was held the following year, in 1908. It was little more than a church service in West Virginia that paid tribute to Ms. Jarvis' mother. Jarvis stood in the foyer and handed out white carnations, her mother's favorite flower, to all who attended.

White carnations are still a very popular flower for Mother's Day floral arrangements. A white carnation is symbolic of purity; its spicy scent symbolic of the sweetness of a mother's love.

The House of Representatives declared that officials of the federal government should also wear white carnations on Mother's day. That was in 1913. One year later Congress officially adopted the concept; Woodrow Wilson signed a bill designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day and a national holiday.

Since then it has grown; added to the sentiment of a day set aside to honor mothers, increased gift-giving, floral arrangements, and special card sending have become the tradition.

Mother's Day Celebrations

Along with the giving of gifts, flowers, and Mother's Day cards, the second Sunday in May is also the most popular day of the year to dine out. Young children look forward to preparing breakfast fare for Mom to enjoy while still in bed, wearing newly acquired pajamas and housecoats. Or families flock to restaurants for midmorning brunch.

Church services are filled with pampered Moms wearing corsages of white carnations or red roses. And Dads treat Moms to romantic candle light dining in the evening; a glistening heart pendant around her neck, or a charm bracelet on a wrist - her newly acquired Mother's Day treasure.

And cards! Small cards, large cards; pink, yellow, green, white, and lavender cards line shelves, tables, and window sills all across the nation. Silly cards, frilly cards, and cards filled with sentiments and poems. Handmade cards, store bought cards; cards made from paper, fabric, and flora. What would Mother's Day be without special cards created in honor of the holiday; tucked under pillows, hand delivered or mailed halfway across the continent.
