Don't forget about Dad!
This June 18th, say Thanks Dad!
with a Special Father's Day Card
Most people I know have expressed mixed feelings in regards to their Father. Dad the disciplinarian, the taskmaster,
and the driving force behind the family unit. But almost without exception dad is the authority figure; loved, respected, and admired.
In the eyes of most children, dad represents the epitome of what a good
man ought to be. Little girls grow into young women seeking a reflection of their father in every potential Mr. Right.
Small boys grow into strapping young men aspiring to be strong just like their dad; but tender like him, too.
It is no wonder that countless dads across the nation will be honored this June 18th , and nearly 100 million children of every age will say Thanks, Dad!
with a hand-selected Father's Day Card!
It all Began In Washington
The 1939 classic,Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
, with Jimmy Stewart cast as the moral hero didn't have anything to do with the establishment of Father's Day. However, his character did reflect the ethics and principles admired in fathers deserving of as much acknowledgment as mothers have on Mother's Day.
A Spokane, Washington woman by the name of Sonora Dodd agreed. After hearing a Mother's Day sermon in 1909 she decided her father, William Smart, deserved recognition, as well. Mr. Smart had selflessly raised Sonora and her siblings by himself after his wife died giving birth to their sixth child. He was also a Civil War veteran.
Because his birthday was in June, Ms. Dodd decided that was a good month for Father's Day. The first humble celebration was in 1910. In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge, a devout father and the only president sworn into office by his own beloved dad, supported the idea.
In 1966 President Lyndon Johnson designated the 3rd Sunday in June as the official celebration of Father's Day; six years later President Richard Nixon made the event a permanent holiday by signing it into law. And the rest is history!
Present Day Father's Day
Though as not as widely celebrated as Mother's Day, Father's Day is becoming an increasingly popular holiday. Meals are prepared, gifts are presented, and toasts are raised in honor of father's across the nation. Cards made by small, nimble hands, and special cards purchased at card, gift, and department stores are mailed or hand delivered.
Father's Day Cards that are funny and make dad laugh, and serious cards that make him burst with pride. Cards expressing sentiments, making the eyes of giver and receiver alike water with heartfelt emotion, and prompt awkward hugs.
Tastefully wrapped gifts wait on an end table by dad's favorite chair; ties and socks the favorite gift choices, skyrocketing men's clothing store sales over 800 million during the month of June. Coffee mugs bearing World's Greatest Dad,
pipes, fishing rods, and subscriptions to sports magazines are also popular gifts.
But whatever gift is presented, each is accompanied by a carefully selected Father's Day Card. Because every child knows; regardless of what shows on the outside, dads are just as sentimental as moms on the inside.
Gratitude expressed by special cards and gifts that say I love and appreciate you,
mean more to dad than he has words to express. All the more reason to make Father's Day memorable this year with a special, hand selected Father's Day Card...one he'll always cherish!
